I've never gone shopping that day - the idea of waking up at 3am to be part of a mob just to save money on something I don't need has never appealed to me. I'd rather sleep in and have left over stuffing and gravy for breakfast.

I'm curious to hear from anyone who's done these events - is it worth it? Any interesting stories from the front?

Black Friday happens online as well. No need to stand in line at 3 am...

But what are the tv's and how good are they? Screen size alone is not enough. Seems like they are usually off-brands like Insignia, Vizio or ones that don't sell well because they have problems. I rarely see good deals on good quality merchandise.

Circuit City has a Compaq Presario with a Pentium II running Win 95 for only $795 (Monitor not included). This is your chance to upgrade MadMind. You'd better be there early.

Circuit City is not the same Circuit City folks are used to. The company went belly up and eventually the name, rights and customer list was bought by the same company that purchased CompUSA.

Article, here.

The only reason I bring it up is because their return policy is not as generous as some may have been used to with the original brand, Circuit City.

More on the topic, my sister in-laws do the whole Black Friday thing every year. It's nearly a religion for them. There are great deals to be had but the stock is generally very low hence, the early morning stampede.

*LOL* Yes, that may be true but have you been to Circuit City lately? They have a number of "hurry" deals. Just sayin'....

I hear the first five people in Best Buy East will get a free trampling. I think they advertised that in hopes the majority of their customers couldn't spell "trampoline" if you put a gun to their heads, but it probably doesn't absolve them of liability when the shit hits the fan.

Black Friday is for the crassest of crass consumers, by which, of course, I mean the perennially stupid. I've seen a higher aggregate IQ on display amongst herds of cows headed for slaughter. At least they're not lined up intentionally.

It's often fun to be downtown that day, but only if you mix in regular drinks/food stops. And it seems to me that while the buy nothing folks have their heart in the right place, they'd be much more productive to urge people to Buy Local.

Downtown? I always figured the biggest Black Friday sales were held at the malls and big-box stores. (Not that I'm encouraging going there. You wouldn't find me shopping on that day without being held at gunpoint.)

I reported on Black Friday some years back and found the phenomenon interesting -- the pre-dawn bumper-to-bumper traffic, the seething hordes. But you won't find me at the mall this Black Friday.

My friends and I use that day to do an annual pub crawl. Much better use of time.

I've gotten a couple of emails regarding a few special releases on Black Friday ala Record Store Day. I have no idea if any of the Madison stores are taking part, but a quick perusal of the list of titles leaves me intrigued. I have no idea if I'll even be around that day but if I am this is the kind of thing that will roust me from my tryptophan slumber.
