Black Friday, Buy Nothing Day, and Walmart

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Black Friday, Buy Nothing Day, and Walmart

Postby Beaver » Mon Nov 19, 2012 9:36 pm

What are your plans for the day after Thanksgiving? Hunt for good deals on Black Friday? Or don't buy anything to support Buy Nothing Day? I will avoid stores at all costs because the traffic and mobs are crazy. I may buy online if there is a great deal.

And then there is Walmart where the workers are striking. I hope they can shut down Walmart.

I don't think I've ever shopped on the day after Thanksgiving.

For the past 8 years or so Friday has been cleanup after Friendsgiving, which includes listening to the Ig Nobel awards on Science Friday and gorging on Christmas music while I scrub out the roasters, portion out leftovers for freezing, and think about hauling out the holiday decorations.

This year, though, I'll be at my sister's year-round cabin on a lovely lake up north. So Friday as usual, pretty much, minus the Ig Nobels, plus family and a walk in the woods.

When I was in college and during several years after, I went home to the Twin Cities each Thanksgiving and my family would always trek into downtown Minneapolis on the day after. We never really got into the whole door buster thing, but partook in the holiday bustle, usually adjourning to a bar for a late lunch. Always fun.

But I'm doing almost exactly what Duca's doing this year, going up north and being as quiet as I can be with a cabin full of dogs and people. It might be nice enough to sit outside.

I won't go anywhere near a mall or department store until well into January. Last year I bought 2 suits at Jos A Bank on Black Friday for a business trip. This year I'm not going anywhere.

I've found Black Friday to be a good day for a Chicago brewpub crawl. There are plenty of less-crazed opportunities to add to peoples' stuff clouds.

I usually go into work the day after Thanksgiving. I think one other person in my office will be here and I can get a ton of shit done without people bugging me. I can take any random Friday off.

I can't believe people are already lining up. I also find it ridiculous that some stores are now opening on Thanksgiving night. Jeebus Christ people, how much do you really save.

I used to LOVE doing that before I started hosting T-giving dinner. I was almost always the only one there, so I'd blast the holiday music and dig into all the housekeeping-type stuff I hadn't gotten around to. It was always the coziest work day of the year.

Oh god, why? For me, this would make work seem like shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, which is much worse than work.

The day-after-thanksgiving with my extended family often involves playing paintball in the woods, although I don't think that's happening this year. We might do mountain biking instead if the ground is dry enough.

1) You can call me Duca, and 2) because I love it. I've curated a fine collection over the last couple decades, and I can't wait (but do) to break it out the day after Thanksgiving. My playlist bears very little resemblance to the retail soundtrack, other than a few Christmas Cocktails and some Vince Guaraldi.

I kinda feel sorry for the people who don't like listening to Xmas music. Most of it makes me feel better. And I haven't been a Christian for a long time.

Today WOLX started playing nothing but Christmas songs 24/7 and will be playing them until Dec. 25.

I won't be listening to that station for at least another month.

Buy Nothing Day is stupid. If you want to make a statement with your spending, buy local. Visit the shops on State, Monroe and Willy Streets. They'll be happy to see you!

The shop small movement is asking people to do their holiday shopping on Saturday. By implication, they are saying don't go to the big boxes on Friday.

Then there is cyber Monday for stuff you can't find locally.

I probably won't do any of the above.
