Walker wants Amtrak and road cuts

Postby Beaver » Tue Apr 30, 2013 8:35 am

The decline of Wisconsin continues.

"Not content with killing Amtrak service to Madison and train-assembling jobs at Talgo in Milwaukee, Scott Walker now wants to bleed $1.1 million from one of the most successful Amtrak lines in recent history to help close (with some road project delays) a looming road-building deficit, the Journal Sentinel reports. And cut another $4.3 million from local road aids, so enjoy the potholes, because more of them will only get bigger."

Scott Walker seeks to slow freeway projects, cut Chicago Amtrak funds

"Gov. Scott Walker's administration wants to delay work on the massive I-94 North-South and Zoo Interchange projects and cut payments for the Hiawatha passenger service to Chicago to help close a $63.4 million shortfall in the state's road fund over the next two years.

The Republican governor would rely purely on spending cuts to close the funding gap rather than raise taxes or fees, likely delaying, until 2015 at least, the inevitable confrontation between the state's sizable transportation plans and its inadequate ability to fund them. The plan from the state Department of Transportation comes just a day before the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee is set to take up Walker's 2013-'15 road plan as part of its overall budget deliberations."

Decrease payments for the Hiawatha passenger trains to Chicago by $1.1 million. Krieser said that was a saving from the state's new contract with Amtrak, the service provider, and wouldn't affect the service level.

This isn't surprising. Taxes and fees won't be raised until AFTER Walker wins the 2014 gubernatorial election. And possibly not until 2016 if he actually thinks he has a shot at the presidency. This is one of those occasions in which winning elections and actually governing are in conflict.

And we all know we can believe someone who says "We're saving millions and it won't affect services one bit! On that you can depend. Because you can trust us."
