10 photos of the Bakken Oil Fields

The North Dakota boomtowns.
A good friend of mine died of cancer a couple years ago. His widow remarried and they've moved to the Bakken Fields where work is plentiful and according to her new husband, will be for years which will probably be long enough for them to retire.

Where they'll retire to is a subject they don't talk about much.

The Bakken Shale is a subsurface rock formation in the Williston Basin that encompasses large swathes of western North Dakota, spilling into Montana and Saskatchewa. Drillers hit oil in the Bakken in 1951 and it has been long known to hold vast reserves, but it wasn’t until a decade ago that drillers had the technical means to extract it in large volumes — horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing opened up the gusher. While the shale contains oil and gas, drillers in the Bakken are after the oil. As for the gas, it just gets burned off in fiery flares that can be seen for miles.

Looks like the amount flared is coming down pretty quickly. In 2011 it looks like it was about 40%. Under 30% now even as production skyrockets.

Problem is, they need pipelines to transport the gas, otherwise there is little that can be done with it other than flaring.

I hope Obie is not holding them up.

You are OK with building more pipelines, aren't you?

In case there is any doubt, I am in favor of them.

The opposite of NIMBY. An oil rig in every back yard!
