The Virginia Way

Postby rabble » Wed Jan 22, 2014 9:21 am

Scratch one more GOP presidential candidate.
IN RICHMOND, politicians like to wax sentimental about the “Virginia Way,” by which they mean a brand of politics glossed by high-minded civility, rhetorical restraint and what passes for bipartisan comity. In fact, there is a second, less upright Virginia Way — complacent about public ethics and the laws necessary to enforce them.

The tragedy of former governor Robert F. McDonnell, indicted on federal corruption charges Tuesday just 10 days after leaving office, is that he exemplified both. Mr. McDonnell achieved important, ground-breaking accomplishments; he was a capable, substantive public servant; he was admired on both sides of the aisle. Yet he also exercised atrocious judgment as the state’s chief executive, indebting himself to a favor-currying businessman. Now Mr. McDonnell, a Republican, is the first of Virginia’s governors, a roster that stretches back to Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson, to face criminal charges.

Meanwhile, in the other Virginia, the government has decided to get tough on the above ground hazardous chemical tanks. Very soon they are going to order the owners of such tanks to tell the state where those tanks are.

Reading different accounts of McDonnell and the charges he faces, I'm getting the feeling his wife, who seems to have had fancy tastes, was a big part of his problems.

She sure does like the lifestyle but if he let her get him so far up the creek like that, I think she's more of a symptom. it would mean he's been making bad choices for a long time.

A request for a delayed court date was denied even though the prosecutor had agreed to it. A plea of Not Guilty entered and a July 28 trial date set.

Some have said the prosecution's willingness to accept a delay indicates strong confidence in the case.

The ex governor's refusal to accept plea deals indicates they feel pretty confident too. About staying out jail, anyway.

I wonder how Walker feels watching this play out. Wondering about that John Doe, maybe.

McDonnell rejected deal which would have had him plead to one felony on non-corruption charges AND LET THE WIFE OFF ENTIRELY.

He said no.

To repeat -- they offered a deal which would have cleared his wife of all criminal charges ... and he turned it down.

Wow.Just wow.

Having spent a couple of decades living and working in Richmond and it's legal community, I can tell you this: It's a good old boys network run by (gasp!) conservatives and the Gov. will skate because he can afford lawyers powerful enough to make it happen. That's why he wouldn't take the fall and let his wife get off scott (pun intended) free. He has way too much info on the shenanigans of others to allow himself to get convicted.

That can't be right. If that's true, the people who indicted him must know they can't make it stick. It would mean the only reason they indicted him was to put him through a public gauntlet, making every detail public and ruining his political future.

He must have really pissed somebody off.
