Repubs nuke their own Majority Leader

Postby kurt_w » Tue Jun 10, 2014 9:08 pm

Eric Cantor, the extremely right wing Republican Majority Leader in the US House of Representatives, just lost his primary. To an even more right-wing challenger.

That's ... impressive.

Somewhat amusingly, both the Democratic and Republican candidates for Cantor's seat are professors at Randolph-Macon College.

In my untimely way, I just opined on this on a different thread.

Short version: I am having trouble wrapping my mind around what someone who thinks Cantor is too liberal is thinking.

You'd have to ask the Republican voters of Virginia, but I wouldn't expect much of an answer.

Who's the Democratic nominee and what are the Dem's chances to pick up a seat? Or is this a carefully gerrymandered R district and the Rs are finally reaping what they've sown? I need to go read a little background here.

There's a silver lining: Cantor shows us no matter how much money you throw into a race, you won't win it if the voters like the other guy better.

Apparently this is the first time in US history that a House majority leader was defeated in a primary.

Wow.

That district is pretty right-wing; in 2012 it voted for Romney 57-42, and in 2008 it voted for McCain 56-44.

Kind of mind-boggling that even Eric Cantor (!) wasn't wacko enough for the GOP base. Cantor is far to the right of the US mainstream.

Just wait. Whoever the TP candidate du jour is in 24 months: "Is David Brat a real conservative?"

So what happened to "The Tea Pary is Dead" meme from the left.

Short answer it doesn't matter. The voters are just tired of Washington business as usual from both sides of the isle.

You have to admit, the Republican winner is interesting. In addition to a PhD in Economics, he has an MA in Theology from Princeton. Of course Newt had a PhD in History.

The Democratic candidate is a college professor (Sociology) from the same liberal arts college.

Eric Cantor was the only non-Christian Republican in either house of congress.

The Dems have found the Tea Party to be a great excuse for their further right-shifted "comprimises".

Ezra Klein has a great list of reactions here:

11 political lessons from Eric Cantor’s loss

This one is interesting:

The Republican Party has a serious data problem. In 2012, Mitt Romney's internal polls were garbage. This year, Eric Cantor's internal polls showed him up by more than 30 points. Something is deeply wrong with the GOP's campaign infrastructure if the party's presidential nominee and the party's House majority leader can't rely on their pollsters.

Heard a quote from the winner this morning, his victory was "a gift from God."

Where's the gift queue? I want to get in it.
