UW System up, Marlborough Park down

UP: UW System. The UW emerges as a big winner in the state budget battle, getting a $159 million increase. That's $25 million short of what UW officials wanted, but much more than state Republicans initially offered. The budget includes $10 million to retain UW faculty, provides financial aid for nearly 6,000 students who were on waiting lists, and fully restores funding for Wisconsin Public Television and Wisconsin Public Radio.

DOWN: Marlborough Park. An arsonist torches a playground in the Allied Drive neighborhood, causing $100,000 in damage. The playground, on the 2200 block of Whenona Drive, lost its monkey bars, slide and other equipment. Police say the arsonist used gasoline to set the fire. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
