It's "Budget Week," which means three consecutive Common Council meetings during which Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will preside over that body's attempt to determine revenue and expenditure policy for the coming year in Madison. For those who view local politics as a spectator sport, that means hours spent glued to Madison City Channel 12. It's sausage making at its best, complete with baffling bromides, atrocious accusations and confounding concessions.
It's already old news that the mayor's budget proposal includes a request to fund 30 new police officers in response to citizen concern over crime in the city. But it should be particularly interesting to see how the Council responds to proposals seeking funds for community centers in the city, which seek to address the root causes of crime.
