Staff writer Paul Gerard reports that David Berreth has been hired as the Madison Art Center's new director, succeeding Tom Garver. The center's board members aren't willing to compare Berreth and Garver, says Gerard, instead hailing Berreth's background in arts administration. "Berreth is the kind of balanced person you need to have a successful community art center," says board president Joseph Melli. Berreth resigns in 1990 to become director of Virginia's Gari Melchers Memorial Gallery. He is now director of the Gari Melchers Home and Studio for the University of Mary Washington. Berreth's successor, Stephen Fleischman, guides the center's growth and transformation into the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. Garver is a Madison-based art curator and consultant.
