If Tip O'Neil was right when he said that all politics is local, then it stands to reason that local politics are based in what happens at the neighborhood level. Consider that the biggest local story of last year in Madison was the concern expressed by residents of a handful of westside neighborhoods over crime. That development led directly to Mayor Dave Cieslewicz calling for the addition of 30 new police officers in his 2008 budget.
But neighborhoods can do a lot more than just flex their political muscles on hot-button issues like crime, and Saturday's Neighborhood Roundtable at CUNA Mutual's Group Training Center aims to educate neighborhood leaders about exactly that. A day's worth of workshops will be kicked off by an introduction from Mayor Dave, whose political agenda of sustainability and environmentalism stands to benefit from having the city embrace it at the most local level.
