Madison Common Council
Tuesday, April 22, 6:30 p.m.
Room 201 of the City-County Building
Has Tim Wong been a thorn in Mayor Dave's side one too many times? Cieslewicz did not renew the outspoken bus advocate's appointment to the Transit and Parking Commission this month.
"The ironic thing is that I probably supported his streetcar initiative longer than just about anyone in town," says Wong. He did, however, vote against the mayor's plan to add parking to the Capitol Square. Wong also repeatedly voted against Madison Metro's fare increases and service cuts -- "doing, I thought, what a good commission should do."
The mayor's office declines to comment on Wong. Spokesman George Twigg says only, "The mayor is committed to maintaining a presence on TPC for advocates of transit, biking and other modes of transportation."
On April 8, the Common Council approved a number of committee appointments, including the mayor's decision to replace Wong with Duane Hinz, the city's former parking czar. But some alders didn't realize Wong was being removed from the committee.
"I would have questioned it," says Ald. Marsha Rummel, who's conferring with others about whether to move reconsideration of the transit committee's appointments at Tuesday's meeting.
On Tuesday, alders will also vote for a new council president. The only candidate running? Ald. Tim Bruer, who has been on the council since 1984 and has served as president twice before. Alds. Larry Palm and Mark Clear will duke it out for president pro tem.
