438 arrested at Mifflin Street Block Party, still no arrests in murder cases; Masked robbers, swastikas and more!

4.30 Wednesday

A 19-year-old Madison man is shot and wounded in front of the Mental Health Center of Dane County. Ald. Mike Verveer says the attack was not random.

5.2 Friday

The father and stepmother of Joel Marino ask to meet with state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen. The family says Madison police are not doing enough to find the person who stabbed Marino to death in his Madison home in January.

Tamba Amara, 28, of Madison, is charged with raping a woman at gunpoint at the Microtel Inn on East Springs Drive. Amara is the brother of Salim Amara, the mentally ill man who in 1998 poured gasoline on Madison Metro bus riders and set them on fire.

5.3 Saturday

About 6,000 people attend the annual Mifflin Street Block Party. Madison police arrest 438 people, mostly for alcohol-related offenses.

A congregant of the Beth Israel Center on the near west side finds three swastikas and the words "Die, Jew" drawn on the synagogue's walls and doors. The synagogue was vandalized in a similar manner last month.

Robert Dorsey, 27, of Madison, is arrested for drunk driving and excessive speed. Police say he was doing 94 mph on the Beltline.

5.5 Monday

Madison police say a pair of masked men may be responsible for as many as 10 robberies on East Washington Avenue. Some businesses, including Red Letter News, have been hit more than once.

5.6 Tuesday

A national survey reveals Dane County's home values have declined in the past 12 months. Home values in Fitchburg were down 6.2%, while Cottage Grove, Waunakee and DeForest decreased 4% or more. Madison saw a 2% decline.

The Madison Common Council approves an $8 million apartment project on the corner of West Wilson and South Bassett streets. The project, by McGrath & Associates, will be four stories and have 40 units.

Marcus Theatres announces plans to close its Eastgate Theatre and to develop a new entertainment complex off Nelson Road. The old site would be sold and buildings razed.

5.7 Wednesday

UW System President Kevin Reilly announces the four finalists for UW-Madison chancellor: Gary Sandefur, dean of UW's College of Letters and Sciences; Biddy (Carolyn) Martin, provost of Cornell University in New York; R. Timothy Mulcahy, vice president of research at the University of Minnesota; and Rebecca Blank, former dean of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. The new chancellor will be named when the Board of Regents meets next month.
