Mayors are invited to participate in ribbon cutting and ground breaking ceremonies all the time. The opening of new schools, factories, community centers, stadiums are all likely to feature a cast of local dignitaries. But a traffic signal?
Well, if you've ever driven on Gammon Road, just north of Mineral Point Road where Memorial High and Jefferson Middle School sit, you'll know that the intersectin at Tree Lane can be a nightmare, particularly when Memorial students are arriving at or leaving from school each day. Worse, Tree Lane serves as the pick-up/drop-off area for anyone approaching the schools from the north and students are often forced to play a real-life version of Frogger as they attempt to navigate Gammon.
A new traffic signal on that corner is certainly welcome and definitely an event worth celebrating, which is what Mayor Dave Cieslewicz plans to do on Friday at noon. But a word of caution, Mayor Dave: look both ways and wear white.
