I guess this is urban planning week in Mayor Dave Cieslewicz's office, even more than normal. Monday, Mayor Dave addresses an Intro to Planning class at the UW and follows it up by lunching with the students and their professor, Harvey Jacobs, who also teaches a course on Green Politics.
According to his biography, "Professor Jacobs is interested in how societies define property, and the institutions they develop to manage the relationship between private and public rights in property. In his work he argues that these institutions are often a stage in which we act out social debate about more fundamental social values (such as liberty, democracy, citizenship and empowerment)."
Later in the week, Cieslewicz will attend a lecture by Doug Farr, author of Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature, as part of the Upper Midwest Planning Conference. The conference meets at Monona Terrace on Thursday and Friday and includes a pub crawl, which organizers list among the conference's "Mobile Workshops" in the program. Nice.
Destinations for the pub crawl are not listed, but chances are pretty good that if someone sidles up to you at a downtown bar on Thursday night and compliments you on Madison's system of bike paths or in-fill development, you're in the midst of some urban planners.
