Alcohol Coalition
Monday, Dec. 8, 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 9, 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 10, 6 p.m.
Alliant Energy Center
Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk is holding a series of meetings to seek ideas on how to curb Wisconsin's serious alcohol addiction. The coalition, which includes community leaders, business executives, educators and health professionals, may come up with specific policies for the county to implement.
(Update: All three meetings have been postponed due to weather.)
Transit & Parking Commission
Tuesday, Dec. 9, 5 p.m.
Room 260, Madison Municipal Building
It's the meeting everyone's been waiting for: How will the TPC address Madison Metro's projected $682,000 deficit next year? Will the TPC raise cash fares by 50 cents, to $2? Will the TPC instead go for a proposal by housing advocate Lisa Subeck, to create a special $1.25 fare for low-income individuals? Or will the commission consider cutting service or reducing security instead?
All of these questions will finally be resolved…unless the meeting is cancelled because of the massive snowstorm headed this way.
Madison Election Advisory Committee
Wednesday, Dec. 10, 4:30 p.m.
Room 108, City-County Building
The committee debriefs after the Nov. 4 election. No major snafus were reported. The committee will also discuss a proposal by the state's Government Accountability Board to switch from absentee ballots to early voting. With early voting, residents wouldn't have to apply for an absentee ballot, and could instead cast their vote beginning a few days before Election Day. Municipal clerks could also begin counting the votes right away.
Community Development Authority
Thursday, Dec. 11, 4:30 p.m.
Room 260, Madison Municipal Building
Stuart Levitan is ending his tenure as chair of the Community Development Authority this month. Levitan was a sometimes contentious leader, unafraid to challenge city leaders. Earlier this year, he delivered a harsh, public rebuke to Ald. Tim Bruer for refusing to allow a homeless shelter to be located on Park Street. One of Levitan's final acts as chair is to submit the CDA's annual report. In a memo accompanying the report, he notes, "No other position in my 30 years in municipal affairs has offered greater opportunity for direct, significant involvement in matters of lasting importance. I hope I was able to make some contribution befitting that opportunity."
Levitan will remain on the CDA. He is replaced as chair by Gregg Shimanski, who runs a real estate management company.
