What has the state's new list (PDF) of fines imposed in 2008 by the agency, launched in January following the merger of the state Election and Ethics Boards.
The document lists fines totaling $13,858 from 56 candidates or campaign committees. The violations are about evenly divided between lobbying and campaign finance violations.
The highest fine was $2,700, against John and Giesle Brogan for exceeding the limit on individual contributions. Patricia Kern was fined $1,100 for the same violation.
The forfeitures for lobbying violations fell into three categories: Fourteen candidates were fined for accepting improper contributions from lobbyists; seven entities failed to fail file a report by the prescribed deadline (including a $25 fine imposed on the city of Madison), and nine interest groups failed to notify the board of a lobbying communication.
The fines for campaign finance violations involved a wider range of offenses, most for failing to pay a filing fee or submit requisite paperwork.
