UP: Madison schools. Just as the district announces an austerity budget of $368 million comes news that it will receive $11.7 in federal stimulus money. Also announced: A "think tank" of school staff members awards $45,677 for initiatives, like one to let students at Allis Elementary sit on large rubber balls rather than chairs. Hmmm, how many big rubber balls might $11.7 million buy?

DOWN: Cruising. Madison police, with help from the State Patrol, are cracking down on young people these days who drive up and down East Washington Avenue. More than 100 citations and 50 warnings were issued on two weekend days in mid-April for infractions like speeding. A police official says cruising activities are "dangerous and pose significant safety concerns" as well as "reduce the quality of life" for residents along East Wash.
