Contributing editor George Vukelich devotes his "Listening In" column to Nicole Gotthelf, who exits the Madison Common Council after eight years. "I think the council members need to have a vision," says the New York City native and executive director for Community Shares of Wisconsin. "You just can't be parochial and looking out only for your own district. You also have to realize that you're elected to function on a city level." Gotthelf also argues that, since national policies affect Madison, "it's okay for the council to have a position on, say, Central America." Gotthelf now works for the Center for Neighborhood Technology, a nonprofit based in Chicago.
