I'm here to squelch the rumor that those of us who come downtown every day aren't working. What do you think, we're holding hands and playing "Ring Around the Capitol"? We're working here! And to prove it, next week, June 22-26, Downtown Madison Inc., the Business Improvement District and a host of co-sponsors are putting on the first Downtown Works Week.
Actually, I think the phrase "Downtown Works" refers to the hospitality and congeniality of Madison's downtown. Let me relay the event's stated mission: "Downtown Works Week is a weeklong event that aims to encourage participation and inspire pride in working in downtown Madison. DWW offers opportunities for employees to move beyond their workspace, meet others who work downtown and engage in a variety of fun activities that celebrate our wonderfully diverse city."
The week kicks off with opening ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. Monday on the Monona Terrace rooftop. Highlights include an urban obstacle course with MadParkour at the Downtown MATC campus at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday; Madison's Largest Coffee Break at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Monona Terrace; Mallards Speed Pitch Contest at Monona Terrace at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday; and closing ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Monona Terrace.
There are many other events throughout the week, including Madison's #1 Happy Hour, sponsored by Isthmus, 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, at the Great Dane brewpub, Brocach Irish Pub and Zander's Capitol Grill. Stop in for a drink at one of these three places and drop your business card into the fishbowl for a chance to win one of the great prizes being offered.
