Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz declares his support for Hammes Co.'s $109 million makeover of the Edgewater Hotel, including $16 million in public assistance. The developer of another proposed hotel tells the State Journal the city deemed that project "not...feasible" without contacting him, even though he seeks no public subsidy. See related story, here.

Gerald O. Orton, 44, of Madison, is charged with first-degree attempted murder for allegedly hitting his estranged wife in the head with a mallet, twice, after declaring, "Tonight's the night you're going to die." She sustained serious injuries in the Aug. 19 attack.

Montez Vinson, 29, dies in a Racine hospital from injuries sustained in a July 10 fight in Verona. Homicide charges may now be brought against a 21-year-old Madison man who purportedly "delivered a tremendously forceful closed-fist blow" to Vinson's head.
The Fitchburg Star, a free biweekly founded in 1975, says it will publish its last print edition on Thursday and thereafter be a web-only publication. Sigh.

Madison resident Pablo Zarinana is struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing East Washington Avenue near Stoughton Road. The driver, Cynthia Person, 54, is arrested on tentative charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
Irwin Goodman of Madison, who together with his brother Robert operated Goodman's Jewelers on State Street for 61 years, dies at age 94. The Goodmans gave more than $10 million to philanthropic causes, including the Goodman Pool and Atwood (now Goodman) Community Center.

Jesse R. Ruegsegger, 29, is sentenced to eight years in prison for causing a fatal crash while drunk in March. "The worst part is," he says in court, "I don't remember any of it." Actually, that's not the worst part.

The Madison Common Council approves a request to spend $32,000 on a program to mandate that city residents recycle clean plastic bags by taking them to drop-off sites.
The council also picks the pink plastic flamingo as the city's official bird. Really.
