Inside, outside

Despite the weather in evidence the past couple of weeks, it is going to get colder, and darker, outside. Winter really is coming. And thus, it is time to start moving life indoors again. So here comes the fall edition of Abode, our twice-yearly supplement packaged with this issue, dealing with the places we live and where we will spend the winter months in comfort and contentedness.

In this edition, supplements editor Linda Falkenstein crafts an "Emphasis" section that deals with a range of things that go inside the home. She covers the decorative side with visits to some antique/reuse venues, then switches to the kitchen, doing a rundown on utensils. In the end she makes her way to the bathroom, where we learn the virtues of the HET (high efficiency toilet).

Falkenstein also pens one of the two features in Abode, "A Reasonable House." This chronicles the remodeling adventures of Gary and Yvonne Bushland, who readied their existing home for the next chapter of their lives rather than seek a new place to live a new lifestyle. Josh Wimmer gets up on the roof, for maybe the last time, with his feature "Cool Tin Roofs." There is something relatively new under the sun.

And the colder months usher in the theater season - entertaining us indoors. Susan Kepecs does the honors again this year, handicapping the season's programs at Overture and the Wisconsin Union Theater. The effects of the recession have been felt in our arts choices, according to Kepecs, but there are still interesting things to look forward to. And sippy cups have come to Overture, for selected performances, so some folks will be able to take their drinks into some shows, including red wine!

Red wine - that reminds me: We eat a lot in wintertime. Michael Pollan, popular food journalist, is coming to town, and Bill Lueders interviews him in "Michael Pollan Wants to Change How You Eat." You can catch Pollan around town next week. Consult the Guide.
