Madison schools up, Dave Cieslewicz down

UP: Madison schools. The school district will receive $3.4 million in an antitrust suit filed on behalf of Wisconsin governments against Microsoft Corp. The lawsuit was settled in 2007 and netted a total of $224 million for state schools. There are restrictions on how the money may be used, but it's good news in a district facing an $18.1 million budget deficit.

DOWN: Dave Cieslewicz. Madison's mayor is getting serious backlash over his push to renovate the existing Central Library following the collapse last month of a deal with Fiore Cos. to build a new one. Many are asking: What happened? "This should not be a means of the mayor saving face for some very, very bad negotiating," Ald. Michael Schumacher tells the Wisconsin State Journal. Meanwhile, Downtown Madison Inc. asks the mayor to go back to the negotiating table.
