Morlino is wrong
Bill Lueders' column ("Morlino: Pope's Critics are 'Disobedient,'" 4/9/10) was exactly on target [regarding] Bishop Morlino's recent comments that minimized priestly abuse of kids and the wretched cover-up of that abuse by the pope and Catholic hierarchy.
The bishop's comments were clearly defensive and inaccurate when he (beyond reason) accused critics and the news media of trying to destroy Catholicism. The hierarchy is doing a fine job of that itself - it doesn't require any outside help.
It's too bad that bishops don't serve at the pleasure of the people, as they once did. My guess is that, if they did, Morlino could well lose his red hat.

Growing appreciation
We would like to thank Isthmus and Joe Tarr for the informative article on the rise of food pantry gardens in Dane County ("Gonna Make This Garden Grow," 4/9/10). As was noted, the push to make nutritious, locally grown foods available to households experiencing poverty requires many hands, and Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin is appreciative of all of them.
We would be remiss not to thank the Madison Community Foundation (MCF) for its support of this effort. Three years ago, MCF had the foresight to believe in our idea and found a way to make it happen. The success we are seeing now is in no small part a product of MCF's belief that all residents of Dane County have a right to take part in our "green" movement and have access to the best possible food.
