A shameful display

Re: your story on Madison police citations and pedestrians ("You Stopped Me for That?," 5/21/10). I have lived in Madison for 11 years now and am still shaking my head in disbelief at the law enforcement in this city.

Unsolved murders, intravenous users walking State Street high, panhandlers for the last decade distributing hard drugs, mentally ill homeless seen here for the last decade as well, illegal pollution of our lakes and parks, children hustled on State Street to sell candy stolen from a local vendor, prostitution on Badger Road, tear gas thrown at crowds on Halloween, sexual offenders living near children's parks, and obvious abuse of power with a law enforcement badge.

Whatever happened to protect and serve? Issuing citations over pedestrian crosswalks as part of a silly grant seems to be the least of our worries in this city.

This is a shameful display of a waste of money, put forth by the city without any concern for the last 10 years of problems. A serious wake-up call for the city and its citizens today is definitely in order.

Great issue last week. One thing seemed odd. Your sportswriter, Jason Joyce, began his column by telling us he took a day off to go to a Brewers game ("Casey at the Bat," 5/21/10). Then he wrote a thoughtful column about the team.

Sounds like a business trip. I say pay the man to do his job. This is why papers are losing good people. Thank you for listening.
