Tuesday, February 21 marks the first election day in Wisconsin with the new voter identification regulations in place at the polls. Voters across the state are now required to present a specific form of ID to poll workers and sign their name or mark in the poll book in order to receive a ballot. Follow live tweets, aggregated reports, and discussion throughout the day and evening here.
The state Government Accountability Board is promoting awareness about these new requirements via its Bring It to the Ballot campaign, which lists the forms of acceptable identification and describes the new ballot process at polling places. More information is detailed in a FAQ provided by the Board.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. As noted in a GAB press release:
Tuesday's Spring Primary Election will be relatively small, with voters in approximately 520 of Wisconsin's 1,850 cities, villages and towns going to the polls. These primary elections typically have turnouts of less than 10 percent of eligible voters. As a result, the G.A.B. does not anticipate major problems with implementation of the new law at this election. Most contested races across the state are for circuit court seats in Dane, Kenosha, Menominee, Milwaukee, Oneida, and Rock counties. More information about the specific races is provided by the GAB, as is polling place information via its Wisconsin Voter Public Access database.
In Dane County, there is one primary for circuit court, two for the Board of Supervisors, and several municipal contests. The Dane County Clerk provides additional voting information, as well as unofficial canvass results once the polls close.
