Gov. Scott Walker up; Labor unions down

UP: Gov. Scott Walker. The embattled governor, reviled by the left, easily beats back efforts to recall him. Media called the election less than an hour after polls closed. In his victory speech, Walker graciously pats himself on the back, saying, "Voters really do want leaders who stand up and make the tough decisions."

DOWN: Labor unions. Tuesday's election was a crushing blow to organized labor, not just in Wisconsin but nationwide. Commentator David Frum writes in The Daily Beast: "The Wisconsin recall vote was a battle at a time and place of the unions' own choosing. They still lost, and in one of the bluest states of non-coastal America. Who'll fear them now?"
