This coming first full week of November promises to be rather busy. There are a lot of things to plan for and remember. Let me help you out.

This Sunday, Nov. 4, standard time arrives. I think this is the second year for the permanent designation of the first Sunday of November as change day. Set your clocks back one hour. It continues to get darker earlier. Winter fast approaches.

Then I hear, constantly, that there's an election on Tuesday. I'm told the results may change the course of Western civilization. We should take it seriously, and vote. We should not cry over the outcome, no matter how disappointing or exhilarating. It will not change the course of Western civilization.

We come then to Wednesday, Nov. 7, when the 11th (by my count) Wisconsin Book Festival kicks off. It is presented by the Wisconsin Humanities Council and runs through Sunday at a variety of venues in downtown Madison. The program for the weekend was a supplement to Isthmus two weeks ago, in issue number 42. Should you have been negligent in obtaining or retaining that issue, the information can be found at wisconsinbookfestival.org.

Since we land on the topic of books, I would remind you that TheDailyPage.com has a book department. It resides under the toolbar heading "Arts," and features book reviews by various Isthmus staff members and contributors, and many by blogger Becky Holmes. It also carries book news and book-related events from the Guide.

If you're not sure what to read, those reviews are informative. You can also see what books are best-sellers at local bookstores and consult a list of book-related businesses from our online Marketplace. It could be a long winter. Be prepared to curl up with a good book.
