Madison police arrest three 13-year-old boys for stealing candy and condoms from a Walgreens on South Whitney Way and then threatening the manager with steak knives.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that although Gov. Scott Walker wants to get rid of same-day voter registration in Wisconsin, he helped his son, Matt, register to vote on the same day of the primary, Aug. 14. Walker spokeswoman Jocelyn Webster says that although the governor would like to get rid of same-day registration, it's not a priority for him. Adds Webster: "If Matt did register on election day, I think it would highlight that point." It highlights a number of points about the governor.
Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge Michael Guolee sentences Kevin Kavanaugh to two years in prison for embezzling more than $51,000 in donations to veterans. He is the fifth associate of Gov. Walker to be sentenced from the John Doe investigation.
The UW Board of Regents approves an overhaul to its personnel system, allowing the UW to change how 20,000 employees are classified, recruited, paid and evaluated.

Dane County Circuit Judge William Hanrahan sentences Robert L. Ruffin, 44, to 12 years in prison for cutting his girlfriend's throat with a knife in July 2011. Mariah Flemming survived the assault.
Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi sentences Christopher Golden, 42, to 15 years in prison for raping a woman in a downtown parking lot 12 years ago.
Ed Falone, a Marquette Law School professor, announces he'll run for state Supreme Court in the spring, joining attorney Vince Megna as declared challengers for Justice Patience Roggensack's seat.
A state committee reports that ending same-day voter registration would cost the state $5.2 million immediately and about $1.9 million every two years. The costs would be due to federal requirements that kick in without same-day registration.

The UW Board of Regents agrees to pay athletic director Barry Alvarez an extra $118,500 for December for coaching the Badger football team ahead of the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl. Money will come from the $1 million the University of Arkansas is paying the UW to buy out the contract of former coach Bret Bielema. Says Alvarez: "You know what? I did my first three [years] in double-duty for free - and no mas."
The State Journal reports that open enrollment - which allows parents to send their children to other school districts - cost the Madison district $4.9 million this year. More than 1,000 students living in the district go to school outside of it.
The state Natural Resources Board approves hunting in about two-thirds of the state's parks, but for a shorter time period than originally proposed.
