BJ's Kolaches food cart vends at Monona Menard's for winter break

BJ's Kolaches, the campus-area food cart that usually vends in front of Grainger Hall on University Avenue, is trying a new strategy while the UW is in recess. Owner Jon Carapezza was looking for a site to vend while the students were away and was inspired by the hot dog sales at Home Depot. He was able to secure a spot at the Monona Menard's, and will give vending there a trial run Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., near the front doors.

Kolaches are originally an Eastern European stuffed pastry, usually sweet, but BJ's are inspired by the popular Texas version. These are savory dumplings somewhat resembling knishes. BJ's flavors have included Philly cheesesteak, spinach and artichoke, kielbasa, and beef brisket ($3 each; two plus a drink, $6.50). BJ's will return to the usual Grainger spot when spring semester starts the week of Jan. 21. For updates, see
