Donora: Play Nice
(Rostrum Records)
on

Is sugar a musical genre? I think it is. Donora's five-song EP Play Nice is so sticky-sweet that it almost makes your teeth hurt.

Fans of Neon Trees and Walk the Moon will enjoy this Pittsburgh trio's poppy, upbeat music. First track "Float Away" sets the album's tone. The lyrics are sparse, and the song structure is simple. In other words, it's perfect fodder for a TV commercial. The title track also lacks substance, especially in the lyrics department, and breathy, repetitive vocals don't make it any more appealing. This tune's the kind of thing I'd use to keep me awake at work.

Although Donora try to explore more serious topics during "Hold My Hand," the song veers into cheesy territory. Instead, Donora are best when they're carefree and they know it. Songs like "You Dream" and album closer "Under the Lights" are '80s-inspired party jams.

When the first summer-hot day arrives this spring, call in sick, head to the beach and make Play Nice the soundtrack to your fun in the sun.
