Potholes up; Tim Bruer down

UP: Potholes. Erratic March weather has taken a toll on Madison's roads, with the number of potholes and road cracks drastically up. Stephen Schultz, operations manager at the Madison Streets Department, says city workers have used more than twice as much temporary fill this year as they did last. "Last year, we had the 80-degree weather and it just stayed warm, so we didn't have that problem," Schultz tells the Wisconsin State Journal.

DOWN: Tim Bruer. The longest-serving member of Madison's Common Council was upset in Tuesday's election by John Strasser, his first serious opponent in almost two decades. First elected to the council in 1984, Bruer was a controversial but central figure, often wielding power behind the scenes. He did little campaigning for the race, and Strasser won convincingly, with 59% of the vote.
