The winter of our discontent

The thing most on people's minds these days is "When is it going to warm up?" And the more we wonder, the colder it gets. Come on, it's about to be March 1! We are a hardy folk, but enough is enough. Pretty soon the climate will be messing with our growing season, not to mention our minds.

It's a good thing we have Walkergate (not a very original title, but not worth much more effort). The 27,000-page document dump has kept Wisconsin journalist types very busy, eagerly poring through the trove to find their own nugget of revelation. Our staff found some, as you will see inside. Walker is in enough hot water to keep the political commentary liquid and running free at least until signs of spring start showing up.

We feel confident that such signs will be appearing in March. As of the first of March registration is open for Isthmus Paddle & Portage -- you know, the event in which you paddle a course on Lake Mendota, pick up your watercraft and carry it across the isthmus to Lake Monona, then paddle across to Turville Point, where people will gather to drink beer. The race date is July 19. Look for details at

Our immediate preparations for Isthmus events concern Green Day, our annual eco-exhibition, scheduled this year for April 26 at Monona Terrace. We're also preparing for other events and supplements. Coming soon is the guide to the Wisconsin Film Festival. The festival itself is April 3-10.

In March and April we will bring you, respectively, our annual overview of the local restaurant scene, Dining, and our home and garden spring (!!!) supplement, Abode. Then, after Green Day, comes our next event, A La Carts, wherein the local food-cart industry hosts an outdoor sampling experience on a warm Friday evening in May. Can you imagine?
