Russ Feingold up, UW marching band down

UP: Russ Feingold. Wisconsin's Democratic senator is tapped as Madison Magazine's 'Person of the Year' for his courage and independence ' such as being one of the first members of Congress to call for withdrawing troops from Iraq. Feingold, who is eyeing a run for president in 2008, is also picked as one of the 'Nine Pillars of Congress' by Esquire magazine, which calls him 'the kind of Democrat every Democrat should aspire to be.'

DOWN: UW marching band. Chancellor John Wiley puts the band on probation, citing numerous complaints that older band members have sexually harassed and hazed freshmen. On a recent road trip, said Wiley, band members engaged in semi-nude dancing and shaved one member's head. Longtime band director Mike Leckrone says he may resign if the band doesn't shape up. (See sports column: "Boorish is the band")
