A cattier, snarkier, bloggier item might use the occasion of a Monday morning meeting with both Lisa Subeck and Ald. Brenda Konkel in attendance to call people's attention to the duo's recent dust-up on The Daily Page Forum.
But I'd rather use this space to call attention to Mayor Dave Cieslewicz's involvement with Bike to Work Week. I was listening, regrettably, to WIBA this morning when Mitch Henck briefly ranted about how he thinks the mayor ought to be spending time on solving Verona Road congestion or planning a northside beltline or something instead of encouraging people to ride their bikes to work.
Why would anyone who is concerned about congestion be opposed to biking to work? Wouldn't congestion be lessened if more people rode their bikes to work each day instead of driving their cars? Eagerly pursuing the road projects Henck listed will cost millions, yet taking a little time to encourage alternative transportation is essentially free.
It's time for Henck and others who are constantly preaching fiscal responsibility from government to realize that a lot of environmental initiatives help the bottom line as much as the quality of our air and health of our fellow citizens.
