Fair Wisconsin up and St. Mary's down

UP: Fair Wisconsin. The group raises $1.3 million between March 1st and June 30th in its campaign against the proposed state constitutional amendment banning gay marriages and civil unions. The group garners more than 5,000 donations, 90% from in-state sources. The biggest boost comes from Madison philanthropist Dale Leibowitz, who gives $275,000. Vote Yes for Marriage, the group supporting the ban, reports just $2,500, but is primarily spreading its message through related organizations that do not reveal their finances.

DOWN: St. Mary's. Federal and state authorities warn the hospital that it could lose its contract with Medicare or even its license, unless it can fix problems that led to the death of a 16-year-old Madison girl. Jasmine Gant died during labor early this month after a nurse accidentally put the wrong medication into her IV. The hospital has apologized, and says it is taking steps to prevent a recurrence.
