Fancy sheets, flame-retardant mattresses and synthetic blankets come at an environmental price.
"Percale, sateen, jersey knit - these 'finishes' are what gives fabric its feel, and lots of chemicals are used at that stage of the process," says Sue Brown, co-owner, along with Tyrone Bell, of Satara Inc., a purveyor of "organic and natural products for the home."
Satara carries organic cotton sheets, blankets, and other bed linens, in addition to 100% organic cotton-and-wool mattresses (for adult beds and cribs).
"All of our bed linens are environmentally friendly: no formaldehyde, no chlorine bleach, no flame-retardant compounds, no carcinogens," says Brown.
The store's organic baby products include onesies, slings, baby blankets and stuffed animals and come in soothing, muted shades (no harsh dyes). The products aren't made locally, but Brown and Bell source from manufacturers and co-ops that adhere to fair labor standards.
"People buy from us mainly because they're concerned with their personal health and the health of their family," says Brown. "But their choices have a far-reaching impact on the earth and the people who are tending it."
