Grumpy Troll Brewmaster Mark Duchow unveiled this beer about two months ago. He got the idea while sharing a pizza with a friend over a bottle of Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel (Brasserie d'Achouffe, Belgium). Duchow's Belgian IPA is made with British malts, European and American hops, Belgian abbey yeast and healthy amounts of Belgium Candi sugar resulting in about 9% alcohol.

Grumpy Troll brewmaster Mark Duchow named his assertive Imperial IPA Maggie for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Duchow actually expanded upon the recipe of a homebrewing buddy to make this beer. Maggie is offered year-round at the Grumpy Troll. For a special treat, a "freeze-cured" version of Maggie, Ice Maggie, is currently on tap at the Mount Horeb brewpub.

Brewmaster Mark Duchow of The Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb keeps racking up the awards for impressive beers. The latest: a gold medal in the World Beer Cup for his Baltic porter. Amnesia Baltic Porter was the top pick in its style category. The World Beer Cup, which the industry likes to call the Olympics of beer, featured more than 2800 beers from 58 counties in this year's competition. Earning a gold medal allows the brewer to claim "Best in the World" for that style.

Summer is an awesome time for the beer drinker. But one need not settle for those crystal clear, light bodied, fizzy lagers that so many tend to think ideal for the heat of July and August, as quite an array of hefeweizens and Belgian Wit beers can be found around Madison. The styles are similar, each with cloudy golden hues that seem to contradict their light body and citrus flavors. I've done what I can to enjoy a few of these, in searching for the best seasonal offerings over the last couple of months. Last weekend my travels took me to the Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb, a visit that coincided with the community's annual art fair.

The Grumpy Troll brewpub in Mount Horeb offered a different kind of winter diversion last week by hosting a Medieval Feast Beer Dinner. Five courses and dessert were paired with beers that had been carefully selected by brewmaster Mark Duchow. As the theme would suggest, the overarching premise featured dishes such as Camelot Salad, King Arthur Stone Soup, lamb chops, and leg of fowl. Duchow's major contribution was a special creation called Stein Beer, made with an Old World brewing technique that leaves some very distinctive flavors.

When I started this story, I thought I would focus on a summer beer style or two, like summer wheat beers. But in the process of doing my homework, I learned that focusing only on wheat would be far too limiting. We'll have a great, diverse list of beers to choose from beginning in a couple of weeks.

Every now and then in my quest to keep up on what's brewing in southern Wisconsin, I'm confronted with a creation that just doesn't fit mainstream beer flavors. I put chili or hot pepper beer among those considered atypical. Recently, during a stop at the Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb, I was introduced to a favorite of the locals called Slow Eddie.

For the past several weeks I've found myself on a malt quest -- searching for that perfect pint of flavor with tones of caramel and chocolate. These beers are often deep golden, brown or even stark black. Last weekend, in my desire to explore the tastes of the season, I ended up in Mount Horeb with a dark and rich, sweet and silky stout in hand.

The holiday season often brings out memories of family and friends, and sometimes we raise a glass and toast those who made a difference in our lives. Grumpy Troll brewmaster Mark Duchow recently lost his father. Duchow decided to pay tribute to his dad with a special creation. Rye Bob, a dry and spicy ale, was put on tap a couple of weeks ago, complete with Mr. Duchow's picture on the tap handle.

The Grumpy Troll's brewmaster Mark Duchow makes his Downtown Brown with a combination of six-row, Munich and Breiss-roasted malts. He adds imported Styrain Gold and U.S. Fuggel hops. Downtown Brown usually makes its annual appearance at the Grumpy Troll in March and stays on tap into the fall.

You may have heard the saying "Good things come to those who wait, but not necessarily to those who hesitate." That's a good way to sum up Grumpy Peach, the latest summer seasonal at the Grumpy Troll brewpub in Mount Horeb. Brewmaster Mark Duchow showed incredible patience in brewing a beer that's been fermenting for nearly a year and a half. But get it now, don't hesitate, because this special brew could be gone before mid-August.

Beer drinkers with a taste for seasonals might want to give attention to the increasing number of brews that turn up along with the fall harvest of hops and barley. Hops are commonly picked in late summer and early fall, so that means beers referred to as "fresh hopped" are arriving in brewpubs and on store shelves. One beer worth trying right now is Freedom Forward from the Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb.

Winston Churchill is credited with saying, "Most people hate the taste of beer -- to begin with. It is, however, a prejudice that many people have been able to overcome." That pretty much explains my growing fascination with the Belgian Dubbel.

This summer is a big anniversary for the Troll Capital of the World as Mount Horeb celebrates the sesquicentennial of its founding. In the midst of the summer-long community events and special weekend activities, I've found myself there more than once, so naturally, I've turned to the Grumpy Troll for a pint or two.

'Tis the season for those who like holiday beers. Brewpubs, which can make small batches of unique flavorful brews, are at the forefront this time of year for using spicy, minty, nutty and chocolate accents in their beers. The Grumpy Troll brewpub in Mount Horeb just tapped a little holiday cheer with its Jingle Bells holiday ale, an Altbier made with wild rice.

Every year, a few winners of the Grumpy Troll Homebrew Challenge, a competition organized by the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild, get to make their beer on a commercial scale. In 2011, more than 50 beers were judged. Among top winners, a few are singled out by the Grumpy Troll to appear on its taps. One of last fall's winners is a wheat-based Belgian Tripel called Zippity De Dieu. The beer went on tap a few weeks ago, and has developed an enthusiastic following at the Mount Horeb brewpub.

Ninety-nine beers were submitted in this year's Grumpy Troll Homebrew Challenge, a competition sponsored by the Mount Horeb brewpub and the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild. Judged across seven categories, two winners were selected to make beer with brewmaster Mark Knoebl. One of these creations, Black Fjord, a deep dark ale with tones of ginger and orange, is now on tap at the Grumpy Troll.

The Belgian pale ale emerged as an alternative to the crisp hoppy pilsner beers that are ubiquitous around the world. With a combination of sweet and fruity tones, accented by hops and dryness, this offshoot style of the Belgian brewing tradition can be a wonderful medium-bodied beer, and helps smooth the transition from the heavier, sweeter wintertime brews without venturing too far into the sharp and hoppy beers of summer. The Grumpy Troll is currently offering a version that's worth a visit. Named Bels'consin, it reflects the intersection of select Belgian ingredients and Wisconsin hops.

The traditional tale of Thanksgiving inspired my selection of a beer for the holiday feast this year. I went looking for a brew I could almost see served at the first Thanksgiving table; specifically, one made with wild rice. The Grumpy Troll brewpub in Mount Horeb is serving such a beer, Harvest Moon, which is aptly named for the fall season.

I'm a big fan of porters, especially when they come with a good story. The style emerged some 250 years ago as a beer of the English laboring class. These brews nearly vanished in the United States, though, until they were revived by homebrewers several decades back. And it was these homemade beers that deserve some credit for Ole Eagle, a traditional porter now on tap at the Grumpy Troll.
