A 28-consecutive-day residency requirement is in effect in Wisconsin, wherein the voter needs to have lived at the stated address for that period of time before being able to vote in that district. This is up from 10 days.
Voter Registration, City of Madison
Voter registration is held in the city clerk's office, Rm. 103 of the City-County Building, 8 am-4:30 pm, Mon.-Fri.; city of Madison libraries, by mail, or at polls with proper ID. Registration is open until 5 pm 20 days before an election. During open registration, city of Madison residents may register to vote at any Madison Public Library or in the City Clerk's Office. No proof of residence is needed during open registration. After open registration closes at 5 pm 20 days before an election, you may only register to vote in the City Clerk's Office with proof of residence (i.e.,closed registration), until the Clerk's Office closes for business the Friday before the election.
State law now prohibits voter registration the Saturday, Sunday and Monday before an election, but voters may still register at the polls on Election Day. For more information on closed registration, proof of residence and absentee ballot requirements, call 608-266-4601 or see the website.
