A Bridge Too Far
Released: 1977
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Based on one of Cornelius Ryan's World War II histories ...and all the stars who didn't turn up in The Longest Day probably make an appearance here. The story is a grandiose reconstruction of an equally grandiose Allied military blunder. It's overblown, but interesting.

A Child Is Waiting
Released: 1963
Rated:

John Cassavete's only "establishment" film as a director (it would be almost avant-garde for anyone else): a "problem picture" about retarded children. Having Stanley Kramer as a producer is enough to constrain anyone, but Cassavetes' improvisational genius with actors often shines through, particularly with the children themselves.
A Christmas Carol
Released: 2009
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Robert Zemeckis’ motion-capture rendition of the Dickens classic emphasizes technological novelty, undercutting the emotional elements in the tale of a miser’s Christmastime redemption. As Scrooge, Jim Carrey is asked to play it straight, and that eliminates all the comic mannerisms that make him special. (M.B.)

A Civil Action
Released: 1999

Until it peters out in the end, A Civil Action is never less than watchable, and often much more than that.

Stanley Kubrick's 1971 classic about delinquency and mind control in future Britain.

A Countess From Hong Kong
Released: 1967
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Charlie Chaplin's valedictory, an elegant shipboard romance, charmingly anachronistic and laced with slapstick, about the troubled connections between a diplomat and a stowaway. The movie seems to be continually tossing back fond glances to the 1920's and A Woman Of Paris, Chaplin himself appears in a bit as a seasick porter, and his son Sidney is the diplomat's sidekick. This film is severely underrated: Jean Renoir, who thought Chaplin the greatest of all directors, considered A Countess From Hong Kong as good as any of his others.
A Dance Overdue
Released: 2003
Rated: NR
Now Playing? No
A Dandy In Aspic
Released: 1968
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Wheels within wheels in the world of international intrigue. Typical '60's spy fare, and Anthony Mann's last film.
A Dangerous Method
Released: 2011
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
A patient (Kiera Knightley) loosens Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) from Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortenson) and the rigors of his strictly scientific method, thereby positioning herself at the center of their famous break. David Cronenberg's film is elegant and handsomely made, if never quite revelatory. (K.J.)
A Day At The Races
Released: 1937
Rated:
Now Playing? No
High-grade Marxian anarchy, with Groucho as a lecherous quack name Hackenbush and Chico as the tout pedaling hot tips and "tootsie-frootsie" ice cream. The M-G-M Thalberg production gloss around the Marxes doesn't help-but it doesn't hurt either.
A Decade Under the Influence
Released: 2003
Rated: R

A Decent Factory
Released: 2004
Rated: NR

A Delicate Balance
Released: 1973
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Staid, patrician Connecticut family, gently coming loose at the seams, is invaded by two neighbors who are beset by a nameless, all-consuming fear. The delicate balance "of sanity, civilization and friendship begins to totter. Albee's rather cold, absorbing, slightly Henry Jamesian psychodrama, acted as well as it could possibly be.
A Dirty Shame
Released: 2004
Rated: NC-17

A Distant Trumpet
Released: 1964
Rated:

Raoul Walsh's last film, based on Paul Horgan's cavalry novel. If you had to pick somebody to sign out with, though, I doubt it'd be Troy Donahue.
A Dog of Flanders
Released: 1999
Rated: PG

A Door to the Sky
Released: 1989

A Double Life
Released: 1947
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A great Shakespearean actor, playing the driven, tragic Othello, finds the role seeping into his private life--all its jealousy, madness and murder. A taut, original thriller, with Colman's best performance as the Moor losing his moorings: but what makes the movie are all the canny, vivid glimpses of backstage theater life supplied by writers Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin and director George Cukor.
