Hurry Sundown
Released: 1967
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Piercing portrayal of corruption and racial injustice in the post war rural South, based on the K.B. Gilden novel. The cast is excellent, highlighted by Burgess Meredith in a savagely comic portrayal of a drunken, crooked judge who drawls out epithets and slurs, and rants about keeping "The Nigras" in their place. (M.W.)
Husbands
Released: 1970
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Three married men go on a long, drunken spree after their ex-buddy's funeral. A perceptive look - without any melodrama or contrivance - at the American tradition of male bonding, shot in Cassavetes usual style; gritty, unadorned, with the emphasis on extended, semi-improvised dialogue in which the actors strip themselves bare emotionally. Very few American directors get the rhythm of life down as well as Cassavetes. Here, aided by his buddies Falk and Gazarra captures intimacy, defensive camaraderie, robust humor and inner melancholy. It's a movie of sneaky power. You watch the sodden imbroglios, the tiffs, the realistic vignettes with a bemused interest - until the import and the impact finally reach you.
Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte

Rated:

Robert Aldrich's Grand Guignol follow-up to Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (Intended originally as a reteaming of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford), with sadistic and apparently spooky doings in a guilt-haunted Southern manse. Inferior to its predecessor, but fun anyway.

Heavy on talking heads (Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky), this documentary explores what's broken with our world. It's hard to decide what rankles most: what an astonishing monument to Hollywood director Tom Shadyac's self-absorption the film is, or how flat-out bad the filmmaking is. (K.J.)
