Lady In The Dark

Freud, Conde-Nast and Tin Pan Alley in a promiscuous embrace - as a Vogue-ish editor, on the brink of trauma, has her psyche poked. Based on the Moss Hart-Kurt Weill musical (unaccountably missing the most of the songs), and designed as a sort of rococo Technicolor banana split by Mitchell Leisen and his cohorts. (M.W.)
Lady in the Water

Now Playing? No
Lady Liberty
Released: 1971
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Peculiar comedy about a busty Italian traveling to Greenwich Village, U.S.A., with a mortadella sausage that can't clear customs, interesting, at least, as a foreign slant on American mores and manners.
Lady Of Burlesque
Released: 1943
Rated:

No ecdysiast ran with faster company than Louise Novick, a/k/a/ Gypsy Rose Lee. Her ultra-ladylike, "leave it on" approach to stripping made her a cult figure in fashionable Manhattan, where she lived in a legendary brownstone with roommate Carson McCullers and house mates W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman. She was also an occasional novelist, and this movie - fast, pungent, racy - is an adaptation of her murder mystery, The G String Murders, with backstage carnage and an ecdysiast "tec." Directed by William Wellman (Public Enemy, Roxie Hart), this is a definite oddity.(M.W.)
Lady Sings The Blues
Released: 1973
Rated:

Billie Holiday, as impersonated (very effectively, surprisingly) by Diana Ross. The movie itself is tearstained expose of the I'll Cry Tomorrow school, enlivened by the songs and a little evil high spirits by Richard Pryor as "Piano Man."
Lady Vengeance

Tony Kaye’s thought-provoking documentary about the abortion debate in this country tries to be as fair and balanced as possible. Because he shot the film in black and white, we’re allowed to detach ourselves slightly, think our way through our positions. (K.W.)
Lake Placid

In this by-the-book domestic thriller, newlyweds (Patrick Wilson, Kerry Washington) move into a neighborhood lorded over by a rules-happy sociopath with a gun and a badge (Samuel L. Jackson). The film is boilerplate stuff through and through, aiming to play on our shared fear of a besieged home life but settling instead for being a bland study in improbable vigilantism and profound domestic irritation. (J.R.)

Will Ferrell stars in a bloated, noisy, uncool remake of the ‘70s TV show about a family trapped in an alternate universe of dinosaurs and lizard men. It lacks virtually everything that made the original series so memorable. (M.S.)
Land Of The Pharaohs
Released: 1955

Howard Hawks considered this spectacular re-creation of the building of the pyramids one of his worst failures. And he had a simple explanation: "Neither Bill Faulkner nor I knew how a pharaoh talked." That may be true - although the film's admirers include Henri Langlois and Martin Scorsese. But I have yet to be shown that Hawks is capable of making a bad movie.
