Robert Rossen was dying while he directed this strange, lyrical, lovely and disturbing tale - a romance set in an asylum; a romance between the keeper and the kept. It's also a frightening study of mental and moral disintegration, and it has an atmosphere of eerie tranquility and fatalism almost unique in American cinema. A failure in America, it has been regarded as a masterpiece in Europe since its first appearance.

Charlie Chaplin's last American testament (he was virtually exiled before its release) the wistful, highly personal, bitterly poignant tale of an aging London street entertainer and clown who befriends a suicidal ballerina, guides her toward life, stages one last music-hall performance. This last scene is a classic (it includes the legendary comedy musical duet between Chaplin on the fiddle and Buster Keaton at the piano), and the film as a whole has the simple serenity of a man facing his own impermanence, musing on the frailty and odd beauty of the past and the uncertainty ahead.

After a down-on-his-luck author (Bradley Cooper) ingests a pill that streamlines his brain, he finishes his stillborn novel and makes moves to game Wall Street. Cunningly assembled, this is an anti-laziness polemic for a society that relies more and more on quick fixes. (M.S.)
