A great assemblage of late '60s rock stars...but it's a little chastening to look at this movie and realize that almost half of these people are dead.

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

A cracked philosophical disquisition on most of the conundrums of the human condition, from the womb to the tomb. The purest distillation of Python, and by far the best of their movies (also a Grand Prize winner at the Venice Film Festival.)

Moonlighting
Released: 1982
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Jerzy Skolimowski's tense, potent parable of modern alienation, set against the backdrop of the Solidarity revolt and the subsequent imposition of martial law in Poland. Here, those turbulent events manage to strand a crew of workers, who are remodeling a Polish official's home, in London. Desperate, their foreman conceals the truth from them, drives them relentlessly, steals food when the money dries up. Barely speaking the language (his workers don't speak it at all), he is the ultimate alienated figure, separate from everyone around him. Jeremy Irons interprets this role brilliantly; the film itself is a near-masterpiece.

Morgan!
Released: 1966
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A somewhat crazed Marxist working-class artist goes on a series of wild, imaginative binges - on the eve of his aristocratic ex-wife's wedding to an upper class nerd - climaxing in a gorilla-suit rampage that gets him institutionalized. Very sharp, mordant, skillful comedy; in retrospect, it expresses its era the "mid" mid-'60s, better than most of its contemporaries.

Morning Glory

In this comedy, a TV producer (Rachel McAdams) coerces a solemn journalist (Harrison Ford) into cohosting a breezy morning news program. There are real problems with the performances and the story, but darn if I didn't laugh a lot anyway. (K.B.)

Morocco
Released: 1930
Rated: PG

In 1930, a German movie called The Blue Angel - directed by the American Josef Von Sternberg - had made an international sensation of a disturbingly leggy blonde actress named Marlene Dietrich, a voluptuous siren whose smoky eyes and sultry voice sent out threatening signals of forbidden pleasure and sadomasochistic abandon. Von Sternberg immediately brought his prot©g© to Hollywood, and the result was this astonishingly beautiful, perverse, poetic, cynical movie, all about a "kept woman," Amy Jolly, in radiant finery and male drag...falling for Tom Brown, a Foreign Legionnaire with a mocking smile and a flower behind his ear. Morocco is a symphony of light and shade; its monochrome photography by Lee Garmes is a revelation,,,and the oscillations of the plot between romantic absurdity, hard-boiled cynicism and knowing perversity lend an edgy, nervous tension to the glowing imagery. Von Sternberg was the supreme Hollywood esthete. He always disclaimed - ingenuously, of course - any interest in theme or content. But he created his own chiaroscuro psychological landscapes with such intensity that, years later, an official of Morocco could compliment him on his on-location photography - for a movie that had never strayed from the Paramount sound stages.
