The Western as Grand Opera: Sergio Leone's flabbergasting revenge saga about a cold-eyed killer, a bereaved widow, a Socratic gunslinger and a stranger with a harmonica, all of whom enact their passions against Enrico Morricone's soaring melodies and the massive mesas of Monument Valley. Leone's visual style here has a crazed, intoxicated grandeur.

An Irish fisherman (Colin Farrell) rescues a beautiful woman (Alicja Bachleda) who just might be a mythological sea creature. Writer-director Neil Jordan casts a spell with this mesmerizing sort-of-fairytale. (K.B.)
One Day

Rated: PG-13

College grads (Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess) resolve to remain friends, and over more than 20 years, we revisit them every July 15 to see how that friendship is working out. Ridiculous concept aside, this charming film does much of what you ask of a romance: It gives you two interesting people and a reason to hope that they wind up happy. (S.R.)
One Day in September

One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich
Released: 1971
Rated:

Sober, very severe adaptation of Solzhenitsyn's starkly powerful evocation of life in a Soviet prison camp.
One Direction: This Is Us
Released: 2013
Rated: PG

Morgan Spurlock's documentary about the famous British boy band assembled by American Idol's infamous Simon Cowell. Way too sanitary for its own good, this film is little more than a big, wet kiss to the group's legions of young, female fans. (M.B.)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Released: 1975
Rated: R

Jack Nicholson not only doesn't look the part of R.P. McMurphy, the hero of Ken Kesey's novel, but in some ways he's temperamentally unsuited for it - too introverted and mercurial. But Jack adapts beautifully; he plays way inside himself, refusing to turn McMurphy into a star-turn and forcing your attention to the other characters: the hapless asylum inmates for whom McMurphy represents a brief outburst of life and revolt. Fortunately, he has a director - the expatriate Czech Milos Forman - who has a quiet genius for the bitter little humors and quirks of the everyday. The two of them turn, Kesey's rhapsodic Gotterdammerung of modern institutional castration - with its decidedly sexist, misogynist view of the villain, Nurse Ratched - into something less powerful and mordant, but more poignant and funny.

One Foot in Heaven
Released: 1941

Sentimental biography of an old-fashioned minister. The director, Irving Rapper, was one of Warner Brothers' sappiest (his oeuvre includes Now Voyager and The Christine Jorgensen Story), but both Maltin and Scheuer love this one.
One for the Money
Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13

A Jersey bounty hunter (Katherine Heigl) tracks down a rogue cop -- a guy who'd also treated her badly In high school. Heigl comes off like a girly-girl play-acting at tough broad, and the film has only a glancing relationship with reality. (K.J.)
One From The Heart
Released: 1982

Francis Coppola's dream vision of Las Vegas: Two pairs of crisscrossing lovers traverse a phantasmagorical landscape that seems to be composed of stardust, rainbow-candy slot machines and neon. Visually a real dazzler, but the film seems oddly cold for a musical romance, and its failure actually killed off Coppola's Zoetrope Studios. But it's unique and daring - worth a gamble.

Robin Williams' Sy inhabits a picture-perfect world of his own devising

Animals exhibit incredible behaviors and ingenuity. (TMS)
One Million, B.C.
Released: 1940

A genuine oddity: a caveman epic, based partly on D.W. Griffith's 1912 Man's Genesis, directed partly by Hal Roach, who specialized in two-reel comedies, and partly by Griffith himself. (It was the last film on which the movies' pioneering genius worked.)
One Minute To Zero
Released: 1952

Recycled blood and guts in Korea. (M.W.)
One Missed Call
Released: 2008
Rated: PG-13

In this ill-advised remake of Takashi Miike's Japanese horror film, people receive voice-mails from their future selves about the details of their deaths. The J-horror trend is way past its expired-by date, asphyxiated on soggy tendrils of lank black hair and kabuki-doomy shock cuts. (M.S.)
One More Time
Released: 1970
Rated:

A sequel to Richard Donner's "Salt and Pepper." Fascinatingly enough, this is the only Jerry Lewis directorial effort in which he, himself, did not appear. Perhaps he was trying to get back to Dean Martin by directing two of Dino's old "rat pack" cronies.
One Night at McCool's
Released: 2001
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Starlet Liv Tyler turns femme fatale in this numbingly familiar story.
One Night in the Tropics
Released: 1940
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Triangle in the tropics, occasioned by a bizarre "love insurance" scheme; with two cross-talking chums (Abbott and Costello in their movie debut) as defuddled bystanders. A low cal movie mai tai. (M.W.)
One Night With the King
Released: 2006
Rated: PG

The biblical Esther becomes Queen of Persia and saves the Jewish people from annihilation. The screenplay frequently bogs down in palace intrigue, but the performances are solid, and the film has the lavish look of a proper biblical epic. (M.B.)
One Plus One (Sympathy for the Devil)
Released: 1968
Rated: NR

Jean-Luc Godard's film intercuts scenes of the Rolling Stones with radical groups.
One Rainy Afternoon
Released: 1936
Rated:

Another of Tom Weston's discoveries.
One Sunday Afternoon
Released: 1948
Rated:

Raoul Walsh's musical rehash of his own personal favorite among his movies: Strawberry Blonde, with its sparkling turn-of-the- century milieu, pugnacious dentist, and suffragette heroine. Not as good a remake as Colorado Territory is of High Sierra.
