George Lucas’ fact-based World War II drama is about the first wave of African-American fighter pilots from the pioneering Tuskeegee Airmen. The characters are thin and the dialogue is tin-eared, but the dogfights are well staged, and the throwback sensibility is surprisingly disarming. (S.R.)

Manic Betty and laid-back , hunky Vic in some more frantic show-biz shtick. Frank Loesser, who wrote the score, is also listed as appearing in the cast - which gives this some historical value. (M.W.)

David Mamet freshens up a conventional story about a jiu jitsu teacher (the outstanding Chiwetel Eijofor) who’s persuaded to enter a mixed martial arts bout but discovers that the deal is crooked. Mamet includes his signature motifs of honor, trickery and manhood and displays a more commercial approach to moviemaking than usual. (M.B.)
Redline

Wealthy men of leisure bet $100 million and their own cars on a race of their own devising. The inane story feels mechanical all the way through. (M.S.)

Reds

Ten Days that Shook the World - and a few more - with John Reed, ex-Harvard playboy and chronicler of the Russian Revolution, conceived by producer-director-writer-star as a romantic hero in the Zhivago mold. An intelligent, prodigal super production which Jack Nicholson's acerbic Eugene O'Neill - and a group of real life "witnesses" which include Max Eastman and Dame Rebecca West - easily steal.

Two troubled men (Adam Sandler, Don Cheadle), one of whom lost his family on 9/11, rekindle their friendship. The actors do good work, though the film feels disjointed and sentimental. (M.B.)

It can't seem to decide whether it's a heist flick or a send-up of a heist flick--hard-ass or dumb-ass.

Bill Maher hosts a whirlwind of interviews with representatives of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Mormonism (Eastern and African religions are paid no mind here, which is one of the film's stumbling points). Though fashioned as popular entertainment with laughs and light moments, the film is serious about its mission to upend our rote allegiance to blind faith. (M.B.)

Rembrandt
Released: 1936
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A very bittersweet film biography of the masterly Dutch painter, focusing on his long slide to poverty, disgrace and ruin. Laughton starts the character bit magisterially, as if he and Korda were still doing Henry VIII; then he suddenly imbues Rembrandt with a withering humility and sadness. The lighting, likewise, attempts to duplicate the chiaroscuro effects of Rembrandt's paintings - sometimes broadly, sometimes subtly. A unusual film, likable, very "arty;" it financial failure may have dogged Laughton and Korda in their even more colossal failure of the next year, I, Claudius.
