The Shout

For the past several weeks, audiences have been chuckling at the slightly melodramatic trailer for The Shout - but never judge a movie by its advertising. This is a hauntingly, rich, unforgettable little film, based on Robert Graves' chilling short story about the man who claims to be able to slay with a single scream. Of course, we don't have to worry, because the man is the inmate of a lunatic asylum. His stories are nonsense. The fatal shout is a myth. Or is it?...Jerzy Skolimowski is the superb young Polish director of Barrier and Walkover, two of the more fascinating "experimental" films of the '60s.

More perverted history - and a few historical perversions - from C.B. DeMille, who here turns his filmy eye on the tribulations of the early Christians in Rome. Gibbon would have groaned in dismay...but Charles Laughton's gaudily degenerate Nero offers mild compensation.

America’s favorite nuclear family finally makes the transition to the big screen in this 88-minute episode about Homer causing both a family and an ecological crisis. If the film doesn’t quite hit the heights everybody was hoping for, it’s nevertheless in there swinging with satirical jabs. (K.W.)
The Sin of Harold Diddlebock
Released: 1947
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Harold Lloyd's eternally ebullient "Freshman" (whom we see in a cleverly doctored clip from the original silent) two decades later as a white-collar drudge whose life is in ruins. Somehow, improbably, he falls into possession of a circus, along with a collection of matchlessly pungent swindlers and mountebanks...and by the movie's end, natch, he is sharing a window ledge with a hungry lion. Little seen, and ruinously edited in 1950 by producer Howard Hughes (under the title Mad Wednesday), this is actually one of the Preston Sturges and Harold Lloyd's - comedy masterpieces, is funny and breakneck and flavorsome as anything either man ever did.
The Singing Detective

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

This sequel finds its heroines scattered about following freshman year in college. The film isn’t interested in depth; its only interest is in achieving the absolute peak level of female camaraderie, nostalgic sentimentality and emotional catharsis. (J.R.)

The Slender Thread

The central irony to this witty, insightful, wildly entertaining film about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is that the guy who has connected millions seems incapable of creating his own social connections. There's a ferocity to Eisenberg's performance. (S.R.)
