Bristling courtroom melodrama about an adulterous, murderous couple. One of only two films directed by playwright Clifford Odets, whom Jean Renoir applauded for his "bitter poetry; powerful, profound and despairing."(M.W.)

The Strange One
Released: 1957
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Life in a Southern military Academy with a charming psychotic named Jocko de Paris...Based on "End as a Man", the first novel by Calder Willingham, whom Norman Mailer feels - and I concur "has written what may be the funniest dialogue of our time." (M.W.)
The Stranger
Released: 1946
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A fugitive Nazi, tracked by a remorseless fed, disguises himself as a small-town professor with a penchant for bell-towers and clocks. Time, however, has a more than symbolic grip on him...Orson Welles' weakest movie - he was hamstrung by his producers, and forced to prove he could direct (five years after Citizen Kane!) - but the result is still a fine, stylish "message" thriller, with two brilliant set pieces: the pursuit and murder in a sun-splashed forest, and the climatic duel in the shadowy clock tower.
The Strangers
Released: 2008
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
The horror plot is familiar, as masked human ghoulies torment baffled young lovers (Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman) in a home invasion. But the film creates a palpable sense of fear through the shrewd use of sound, imagery and performances, scaring up some truly visceral viewer responses. (M.B.)
The Strangers: The Story of a Mother and Daughter

The Streets of Greenwood
Released: 1962
Rated: NR
Now Playing? No
Documentary about voter registration efforts during the Civil Rights movement of the early Sixties.
The Stunt Man
Released: 1980
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A criminal on the run hides out by taking the place of a movie company's stunt man, killed while the fugitive eluded the police on a bridge. One of the most exciting American movies in recent years; in some ways, it's a thin, obvious allegory - but B- movie vet Richard Rush seizes the material and keeps it churning with energy and bravura movie tricks. As the company's director, Peter O''Toole gives a great magnetic, hammy performance, comparable to Barrymore's in 20th Century.
The Sugarland Express
Released: 1974
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Steven Spielberg's feature directorial debut (at 25) a whippet-swift little tragicomedy, based on fact, about a Texas jailbreak that turns into a media circus. Everything that was good about Spielberg's later work (Jaws was a year away) is present here: the adolescent humor, the delight in technology, the speed, the brio. (Interestingly, he's never really developed emotionally beyond this film, either.)

A timid young bachelor attempts to woo the women of his dreams in this 1962 feature by French funnyman Pierre Etaix.
