After his mother's lover (Steve Carell) belittles him, a boy (Liam James) befriends a water-park employee (Sam Rockwell) who helps him emerge from his shell. Carell's role is thankless and one-dimensional, but Toni Collette is wonderful as his girlfriend, conveying how loneliness and fear can create blind us to the truth. (S.D.)
The Way We Were
Released: 1973
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The opening and closing of this bittersweet Rich Blond Wasp-Jewish Socialist romance are quite touching, but in-between writer Arthur Laurents keeps losing his grip. Example: Streisand's Katie, as an identifiable collegiate communist, would not have been crusading as a Eleanor Roosevelt liberal for the "rights of the accused" in the HUAC years. She would have been blacklisted herself. Despite such lapses, an effective soaper.

The Wendell Baker Story

Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Luke Wilson wrote, co-directed and stars in the story of a lovable con man who rallies a band of mistreated elderly residents at a retirement hotel. The film begins with life and energy but takes a turn for the soporific when Wendell turns into a dully decent hero. (J.R.)
The Westerner
Released: 1940
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A beautifully shot and ultimately poignant range-war Western. This is perhaps the quintessential "Coop" movie - even though Walter Brennan steals every scene as venal, crusty old Judge Roy Dean ? West of the Pecos. (M.W.)
The Whip

The Whistleblower
Released: 2010
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Working as a peacekeeper in war-ravaged Bosnia, an American cop (Rachel Weisz) uncovers a horrifying sex-trafficking ring. The premise, based on a true story, is searing, but the film relies too heavily on cliches of lurid television procedurals. (K.B.)

A series of disturbing events befall a German village in the 1910s, and the children are acting strangely. There's a genuinely creepy moment or two, but Michael Haneke's mannered film is a bit of a snooze. (K.B.)

The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Released: 2013
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
One of the classic horror movies of the '70s, starring Edward Woodward as an uptight police sergeant who travels to an insular island to look for a missing girl. He gets far more than he bargained for when he discovers the community follows the teachings of pagan leader Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). This is a recent restoration assembled by director Robin Hardy attempting to conform to his original 1973 cut, a version feared lost forever. (B.K.)
