City For Conquest
Released: 1940
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The working class boxer who goes punchy and blind trying to pull his brother from the tenements. High-powered schmaltz, with excellent acting all around, including a rare bit by future director Eli Kazan as a wiry, tense little Brooklyn hood named Googie. Kazan, of course, didn't continue his acting career, but he has a terrific death scene - clutching his bullet-riddled guts by the East River and muttering. "Oooh...I nevah figured on that at all!"
City Island
Released: 2009
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In this manic New York family comedy, a prison guard (Andy Garcia) secretly attends acting classes, and his haranguing wife (Julianna Margulies) suspects an affair. The action spins ever zanier to no great benefit, but there are strains of compassion. (K.J.)
City Lights

Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 silent classic about the Tramp falling in love with a blind flower girl.

City of Ember

Two teens (Saoirse Ronan, Harry Treadaway) search for a way out of the underground city that is home to mankind after unspecified apocalyptic events topside. Despite a splendidly inventive production design and a comically villainous turn from Bill Murray, this feels surprisingly cobbled together from cinematic odds and ends. (M.S.)
City of God

City of Men

The followup to City of God explores the vicious circle of poverty and thug life in Rio de Janeiro’s slums. The film sometimes bogs down in details, but it’s eye-opening in its depiction of the violence that permeates the characters’ lives. (M.B.)
City of Sadness
Released: 1989
Rated: NR

City Of Women
Released: 1981
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Fellini's typically opulent, bizarre and whimsical look at Women's Liberation--as it impacts on a milk-mannered male chauvinist who falls asleep and dreams he has wandered into a feminist Land Of Oz. A light-hearted, physically sumptuous film which acts as a sort of reverse companion piece to Juliet Of The Spirits.
City Streets
Released: 1931
Rated: NR

Civic Duty
Released: 2006

Peter Krause plays an accountant who suspects that the Arab man downstairs (Khaled Abol Naga) is a terrorist. It's a taut drama that keeps you guessing until the end regarding the reliability of the two protagonists. (M.B.)
CJ7
Released: 2008
Rated: PG

Chinese director Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) applies his manic style to a kids’ movie, and the result is a cloying story about a boy who finds an adorable space creature with unearthly powers. Any kid who is the right age to appreciate this pap is going to be too young to read subtitles. (M.B.)

Clash By Night
Released: 1952
Rated:

One of the few times in his later career that Fritz Lang has a good piece of material to work with: a corrosive melodrama of infidelity and violence in a port city, based on Clifford Odet's play. Robert Ryan, as a sadistic movie projectionist, proves once again that he was one of the American cinema's most underrated actors.
Clash of the Titans
Released: 2010
Rated: PG-13

The demigod Perseus (Avatar's Sam Worthington) must find a way to defeat all manner of mythological beasties in this plodding remake of 1981's silly mess. Ralph Fiennes' overeager Hades is almost reason enough to see this entertaining train wreck. (M.S.)

Claudia
Released: 1943
Rated:

A very charming depiction of the struggles and temptations of a pair of apparently spotless newlyweds. Taken from Rose Franken's novel and play; the title role conferred stardom on Dorothy McGuire--and I would have given her that year's Oscar.
Claudine

A good, naturalistic romantic comedy about working-class blacks, by ex-blacklist victim John Berry. (M.W.)

DeMille again, sugarcoating the asp and gold plating the Nile. As good as he can do, more fun than the remake. (M.W.)

Kevin Smith's 1994 film about a day in the lives of two convenience-store clerks.
Clerks II

The slackers from Kevin Smith's Clerks now work at a fast-food joint, and their conversations are as raunchy and witty as they were in the original film. As the restaurant's manager, Rosario Dawson single-handedly raises the production's quality. (M.B.)
