Cutter's Way
Released: 1981
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An allegorical thriller about a murder and blackmail plot that may or may not be fantasy portraits in the mind of Alex Cutter - a snarling, sarcastic, furiously lucid Vietnam vet and paraplegic. Sleeve flapping over his amputated arm, prosthetic leg jerking stiffly, black pirate's patch over an empty left eye socket. Cutter is a terrifyingly modern vision from the lower depths - a burnt out case who wildly, savagely refuses to stay burnt, and who keeps prodding his phlegmatic buddy Bone toward a horrible social reckoning. John Heard is brilliant as Cutter, Jeff Bridges hardly less so as Bone. Directed by Czech expatriate Ivan Passer (Intimate Lighting), it is intelligent, gutsy, sensitive, hilarious, frightening and sad, a neglected little American Masterpiece.

An ATF agent (Denzel Washington) travels back in time to save a woman (Paula Patton) from being murdered. Washington is great, as usual, and the film gets by on visual style and forward momentum. (M.B.)

Musical remake of the Mary Pickford vehicle about a girl in a French orphanage who falls in love, unknowingly, with her longtime benefactor. Not a great musical, despite its charm, but Astaire and Caron are certainly great dancing partners. (M.W.)
Daddy's Little Girls

Rated: PG-13

An attorney (Gabrielle Union) falls in love with a financially challenged single father (Idris Elba) with three kids. As usual, director Tyler Perry (Madeaâ??s Family Reunion) relies on contrivances and sentimentality, but he does manage to spin a good yarn. (T.B.)

Though the film could have explored the early days of the epidemic in more detail, this is an indelible story about one man’s transformation and tenacity. (M.B.)
Dames
Released: 1934
Rated:

Another wildly improbable '30's Warner Bros. backstage musical - on the evidence here, the Broadway stage must have been several miles in circumference, and capable of revolving and flipping on its side - with choreographer Busby Berkeley in his prime: gorgeous, crazy, inimitable,
